Experience

I earned my master's degree from the University of Miami, where I majored in biology and microbiology, focusing on immunology, with chemistry as my minor. I began working as a tutor after taking my first classes. I thought that it was a great way to gain an overall comprehension of class concepts while helping others understand the information. While I was studying as an undergraduate, I chose to become a peer adviser for other students who needed help. During my time helping other students, I was able to relate to other students, and I was able to help them come up with strategies to deal with the stress that all students feel. I also spent some time as an undergraduate assisting teachers as a TA. While I was a TA, I taught other students the proper way to use an electron microscope, which is an incredibly expensive machine that costs nearly $1 million!  After my undergraduate studies were completed, I spent some time working as a tutor for kids that had trouble reading. This position taught me how to teach groups of individuals that had learning difficulties. I learned the importance of communicating effectively and remaining patient with students, and I learned how positively reinforcing students impacts the students' education. I have also worked as a tutor on strategies for student athletes. This taught me about working with people that have busy schedules, and it gave me insight into how organization can help them deal with sporting commitments.   I am passionate about science and math; however, I know that students without the right motivation can find these topics to be extremely uninteresting. For that reason, I take an approach that depends on thinking about the information, and I incorporate real-world examples whenever possible. When students understand the material and the way in which the information can be used practically, they begin to learn the information on a deeper level than simply rote memorization.
