Education

I graduated in 2007 with a B.A in English with minors in Writing and Education. Within less than a year of graduating, I had my Temporary Teaching Certificate for teaching grades 6-12 English. With my temporary certificate, I worked tutoring and teaching while I continued schooling in Education to become a 'highly effective Professional Educator' in Florida. After taking undergrad courses with Seminole State College and graduate courses through UCF's Inital Teaching Preperation Program as well as University of Phoenix online, I gained my Professional Teaching Certificate in English 6-12 and ESOL K-12. Currently, I am finishing an M.A in English Language Arts Education, and I am only a couple courses away (along with the final exams) from gaining additional Reading, Music, and ESE teaching certifications.

Experience

I have over eight years of teaching and tutoring experience. I started tutoring while I was earning my B.A in English. My Freshman year, I was selected by a professor to work in the Student Writing Center helping other students with their writing assignments. I already had a passion for English, Literature, Writing, and all things related to words, but it was while tutoring in college at the Writing Center that I also realized I was a great teacher. This caused me to pursue my teaching certification. Since graduating, I have worked in almost every tutoring/teaching situation imaginable. I have tutored all subjects and grade levels (though the Language Arts are obviously my area of expertise, I love to teach most subjects other than high level math such as Calculus). I have worked as a home school teacher, a private one on one tutor, and a group tutor for the FCAT in Title I schools through the NCLB grant for free tutoring in these high need areas. I also have three years of full-time lead classroom teaching experience at two different charter schools that both focused on providing an alternative educational model to high school students who learn differently. I taught English at both schools, and these students ranged from highly gifted to severely at-risk students and everything in between. This is where I got interested in pursuing additional certifications because I was working with many unique populations, and I wanted to engage in as much professional development as possible to be the best I could be for my students. I have also done SAT, ACT, FCAT, GED, and GRE tutoring. I even worked scoring FCAT writing submissions one summer, and as a swim teacher for a few summers here and there due to years of competitive swimming when I was young. I love to learn and to teach, and I can do it with almost anything. I love tutoring more than teaching a full classroom, at times, because it is a really special kind of teaching experience where growth happens so much faster than in the classroom. Often, in class, teachers can miss many opportunities for extra explanation or development of ideas because of time constraints and large groups of students with so many different learning needs. The best part about tutoring is having the time to really pay attention to the child's unique ways of learning. I am a strong advocate of dynamic, research based, student centered learning because I have found it the most effective over the years. As such, I also like to get to know my students and build a strong professional relationship, so that I can use my knowledge about each student to inform my methods for the most effective delivery of material. I try to keep things interesting by using topics students are already interested in or good at as a basis for leading into new teaching territory. I also try to use multiple sources to meet the needs of mixed learning types (video, reading, answering questions, using webquests or making multi-media projects). I also believe in organization, consistency, and mutal respect, because these things lead to being prepared, covering all the ground needed, and it helps to keep learning fun but meaningful.
